‘YOU’RE A GENIUS,’ SAID Bessie as we walked down Duke Street towards Oxford Street. ‘Why did yer come up wiv that?’

‘Because I knew if we mentioned Rosalind Marchant we would have likely had the door slammed in our faces. And I considered if Mr Wentworth’s prime concern is money an unexpected inheritance would pique his interest. It was a risk I know, but I think it paid off.’

‘What do we do now?’

‘I’m of the opinion he has hidden Rosalind Marchant somewhere. Where would you take a young woman to be hidden so you could convince her to part with her trust fund, Bessie? And also where she would not stand out, but in fact merge into the scenery if her looks and clothing were...adjusted?’

Bessie gasped. ‘Not a knocking shop?’

‘Exactly that. I have a feeling Mr Wentworth could well have an arrangement with one of the ladies of the night who own, as you say, brothels, where Rosalind is currently being held. It would not take much, a locked room, a threat to her physical well-being unless she capitulates, and a little food and water. If Wentworth has already moved on to the next in his sights, Miss Gloriana Percival, we can only assume she will be treated in the same way. Wentworth has not moved far, he has not attempted to leave Duke Street, or to quit London. I doubt he has had the wherewithal to do so until now.’ I shook my head. ‘No, whatever he is doing he is doing on a doorstep close to his own. We must find out which one it is.’

‘Ow do we do that when we’re goin’ ter be somewhere else?’

‘Bearing in mind you and I are due to go into Dorset Street this evening, we will need help, and I have just the man in mind.’
